Subfamily: Twortvirinae

Genus: Sepunavirus

Distinguishing features

There are only two species in this genus – Sepunavirus IPLAC1C and Sepunavirus SEP1. The genome of Staphylococcus phage SEP1, the exemplar isolate of Sepunavirus SEP1, is 139 928 bp with 200 protein coding sequences and no tRNAs (Melo et al., 2014). Members of the genus infect Staphylococcus sp. including S. epidermis.

Species demarcation criteria

Members of the same species are more than 95% identical in genome nucleotide sequence, including the terminal repeat region. Phages with genomes that differ by more than 5% are assigned to different species.
