Etymology-Properties-Diagrams

Information on virus properties, the etymology of taxon names, and virion diagrams have all been updated to coincide with the new release of the virus taxonomy (MSL40).

Diagrams of virion morphology arranged by host and genome type at the family level provide an overview of the diversity of known forms. These diagrams are taken or adapted from the copyrighted ViralZone image library (ViralZone, SIB, Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, https://viralzone.expasy.org)

New Release: Virus Metadata Resource

A new version of the Virus Metadata Resource (VMR) spreadsheet (VMR_MSL40.v1.20250307.xlsx) has been released to coincide with release #40 of the Master Species List. This version, released on March, 7, 2025, can be downloaded from https://ictv.global/vmr/current. This release reflects the taxonomic changes incorporated into the new 2024 - 2025 virus taxonomy, provided in MSL40. This version corrects an error in the March 3 file in which 28 new species were missing from the VMR.
