Distinguishing features

Ollusviruses are currently distinguished from viruses of the second genus in the family based on the basis that their L protein sequences are < 31% identical.

Biology

Classified ollusviruses have been associated with coleopteran, dipteran, hemipteran, hymenopteran, and siphonapteran insects as follows:

• Culverton virus (CvV) has been associated with Hercules’ fleas (macropsyllid Macropsylla hercules Rothschild, 1905) in Australia (Harvey et al., 2019)
• Hánchéng leafhopper mivirus (HLMV) has been associated with cicadellid leafhoppers (Psammotettix alienus (Dahlbom, 1850)) in China (Han et al., 2020)
• Húběi coleoptera virus 3 (HbCV3) has been associated with unspecified beetles (Coleoptera sp.) in China (Shi et al., 2016)
• hymenopteran chu-related virus 123 (HCrV123) has been associated with megachilid bees (Dioxys cincta (Jurine, 1807)) in France (Käfer et al., 2019)
• hymenopteran chu-related virus 126 (HCrV126) has been associated with crabronid wasps (Oxybelus bipunctatus Olivier, 1812) in Germany (Käfer et al., 2019)
• Nomada lathburiana mononega-like virus (NLmlV) has been associated with apid bees (Nomada lathburiana (Kirby, 1802)) in Germany (Chang et al., 2021)
• Oropsylla silantiewi mononega-like virus 2 (OSmlV2) has been associated with ceratophyllid fleas (Oropsylla silantiewi (Wagner, 1898)) in China (Wu et al., 2020)
• Rhagovelia obesa mononega-like virus (ROmlV) has been associated with veliid water striders (Rhagovelia obesa Uhler, 1871) in the USA (Chang et al., 2021)
• Scaldis River bee virus (SRBV) has been associated with European orchard bees (megachilid Osmia cornuta (Latreille, 1805)) in Belgium (Schoonvaere et al., 2016)
• Shāyáng fly virus 1 (SyFV1) has been associated with pepper fruit flies (muscid Atherigona orientalis Schiner, 1868) in China (Li et al., 2015)
• Tàiyuán leafhopper virus (TYLeV) has been associated with cicadellid leafhoppers (Psammotettix alienus (Dahlbom, 1850)) in China (Wang et al., 2019)

Unclassified ollusviruses have been associated with hemipteran and orthopteran insects (Käfer et al., 2019, He et al., 2022, Takemae et al., 2023).

Species demarcation criteria

Members of different species have L protein sequences with <90% amino-acid identity (Di Paola et al., 2022).
