Family: Nyamiviridae

Genus: Berhavirus

Distinguishing features

The genus Berhavirus includes three species. Species are placed in the genus based upon phylogeny and host range.

Virion

Morphology

Not reported.

Nucleic acid

Non-segmented, negative-sense RNA.

Proteins

Berhavirus genomes encode up to 5 proteins including a putative nucleocapsid protein, glycoprotein and large protein identified on the basis of sequence similarity and structural properties shared with mononegavirus homologues, in addition to one or more hypothetical proteins of unknown function.

Genome organization and replication

Berhaviruses have negative-sense RNA genomes of 9.4–10.7 kb (Shi et al., 2016).

Biology

Berhavirus genome sequences were isolated from invertebrate marine animals including echinoderms and sipunculids (marine worms).

Species demarcation criteria

Species are demarcated based upon their members’ phylogeny and hosts.
