Family: Inoviridae

Genus: Villovirus

Distinguishing features

Vibrio phage Vf33 infects Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains expressing the K38 antigen. Virions are about 1,400 nm long and 7 nm wide, with a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.292 g/cm3. Virions are resistant to heating below 80 °C and to treatment with diethylether, acetone or methanol, but sensitive to chloroform. The genome is 8.4 kb long, and encodes 7 proteins (Taniguchi et al., 1984, Chang et al., 1998).

Biology

Members of this genus infect Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Species demarcation criteria

There is only one species in the genus. Members of additional species will be >5% different in the DNA sequence of their genomes as assessed using the BLASTn algorithm.
