Since only one genus is currently recognized, the genus description corresponds to the family description.

Demarcation criteria for taxa within the genus

Species are defined on the basis of vector specificity, plant host range, serological relationships of the N protein and on the criterion that N protein sequences should show less than 90% aa identity with that of any other described species in the genus. In the future, consideration might be given to the use of concatenated orthotospovirus genome sequences for definition of demarcation criteria (Maneechoat et al., 2024).
