Summary

The family Smacoviridae includes ssDNA(+/-) viruses detected in environmental samples and samples derived from diverse animals, including vertebrates (Table 1 Smacoviridae). The family Smacoviridae was established in 2018 (Master Species List #32).

Derivation of names

Babosmacovirus: from baboon, the host /source of viruses in the genus

Bonzesmacovirus: from bovine New Zealand, the host /source of viruses in the genus

Bostasmacovirus: from Bos taurus, the binomial name for cattle, the host /source of viruses in the genus

Bovismacovirus: from bovine and smacovirus

Cosmacovirus: from cow and smacovirus

Dragsmacovirus: from dragonfly and smacovirus

Drosmacovirus: from dromedary and smacovirus

Felismacovirus: from feline and smacovirus

Huchismacovirus: from human smacovirus and chicken smacovirus

Inpeasmacovirus: from Indian peafowl

Porprismacovirus: from porcine smacovirus and primate smacovirus

Simismacovirus: from simian and smacovirus

Smacoviridae: from small circular ssDNA and the vowel o, referring to the size of genomes of viruses in the family; the suffix -viridae for family taxa
