Biography
Małgorzata Łobocka has been a member of the ICTV Bacterial and Archaeal Viruses Subcommittee since 2017, initially as a chair of the Staphylococcusbacteriophage study group and in 2020 as a chair of the Picovirinae study group, involved in the assignment of selected Caudovirales isolates to newly created viral taxa. She started her scientific carrier at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBB PAS), Warsaw, Poland and defended her PhD thesis there in 1990, gaining experience in the work with transducing and mutagenic bacteriophages. The same year, she was granted the Fogarty International Center fellowship for the work on model Punavirus genus phage P1 at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA. Her interest upon return to IBB PAS turned on bacteriophage genomics. She led the early projects of genomic and physiological characteristic of Punavirus genus and Kayvirus genus phages, and participated in several other phage genome sequencing and analysis projects. In 2008-2019 she was also a staff member of the Faculty of Agriculture and Biology at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and disseminated the knowledge on bacteriophages in teaching programs of Genetics and Molecular Biology of Bacteria and Methods of Microbial Genome Analysis. Currently, she is a professor at the IBB PAS, leading the Laboratory of Bacteriophages at the Department of Microbial Biochemistry, but is still involved in supervising the University diploma students. As an expert in the field of bacteriophage genomics and biology, she is a member of the Biotechnology Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
She has supervised 5 PhD and 59 master or bachelor theses, and since 2019 has been a member of Editorial Board for Virology Journal, Springer Nature. She has published 36 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 4 professional publications and a manual for a laboratory course in Genetics and Molecular Biotechnology of Bacteria for master students. Her H-index is 17 (Web of Science).
