In defence of taxonomic governance
A paper has recently been published, "In defence of taxonomic governance" in the journal Organisms Diversity & Evolution by Dr. Stijn Conix of the Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. This paper discusses some of the different approaches utilized to govern the process of taxonomic classification by taxonomists working in different biological disciplines. It uses the ICTV and virus classification as one example of a highly unified, successful approach to taxonomic governance. Conix, S. The Virus Metadata Resource
The Virus Metadata Resource (VMR) is a downloadable spreadsheet that provides information on exemplar viruses for each species. This information includes GenBank and RefSeq accession numbers for exemplar viruses and isolate and common names for viruses belonging to a species. A new VMR based on MSL34 was posted on May 19, 2019. This release adds information on the known categories of hosts infected by the virus or the source environment from which the virus was isolated.

The deadline for this year's proposal submissions to Subcommittee Chairs is May 19, 2019.

New ICTV Life Member:
Mike Adams
We are pleased to announce that Dr Michael J Adams has been elected as a Life Member of the ICTV, following nomination by the President, recommendation by the Executive Committee, and ratification by the ICTV membership. Mike has been involved in the work of the ICTV in many different roles since 2001, and most recently served as ICTV Business Secretary from 2011 until 2017. More than anything, Mike’s good humour and constant wisdom were greatly appreciated by his colleagues on the Executive Committee. We wish him all the best in his retirement, and trust that he will be able to find much fulfilment outside of the world of virus taxonomy.
