Dr. Frederick A. Murphy, Jr., virologist and a past ICTV President, passed away at the age of 92 on June 23, 2026, in Bethesda, Maryland.
A tribute to the life and work of Dr. Fred Murphy has been posted by the University of California, Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to his extensive, pioneering work as a virologist, we would like to recognize Dr. Murphy for his efforts serving the ICTV. Fred first served as Vertebrate virus Subcommittee Chair from 1975 - 1981 and then as President from 1990 - 1996. He was also co-editor of the 6th (1995) ICTV Report on Virus Taxonomy. Subsequently, he was elected and served as an ICTV Life Member until his passing. For all of his many contributions to virology, Fred will be fondly remembered.
