Biography

Koenraad Van Doorslaer is the chair of the ICTV Papillomaviridae Study Group. He has a significant history in dsDNA virus taxonomy with expertise in oncogenic viruses, mainly papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses. He helped established the Papillomavirus Episteme (https://pave.niaid.nih.gov/) a well-curated and annotated papillomavirus database for all sorts of things including classification of papillomaviruses.

Koenraad is a faculty member of the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Arizona. He is also affiliated with the Immunobiology unit and holds appointments within the BIO5 Institute, and the cancer biology and genetics GIDP. His current research combines thorough evolutionary analysis with state-of-the-art molecular techniques to understand why certain DNA viruses are oncogenic. His lab is particularly interested in a subset of human oncogenic papillomaviruses. His research focus areas include the evolutionary genomics of papillomavirus-mediated cancer, the role of recombination in papillomavirus evolution, virus metagenomics (in collaboration with Drs Arvind Varsani and Christopher Buck), and the PapillomaVirus Episteme (PaVE), which provides highly organized and curated papillomavirus genomics information and tools to the scientific community.
