Main research interests:
Computational approaches to biological evolution and function; analysis of genomes and of protein sequences. Applications of bioinformatics to infectious disease. Phylogenetics at the genome scale. Detection of horizontal gene transfer events and analysis of their role in evolution. Systems biology, especially distance measures and edge definition in molecular networks. Synthetic biology as applied to minimal and ancestral genomes. RNA world, virus world and the origin of DNA genomes. Plants, bees, and their parasites.
