Members of the genus Wawtorquevirus have genomes of 2.3–3.4 kb and have been identified in rodents from the families Muridae and Cricetidae, and in a mosquito, this possibly being blood meal-derived.

Different species in the genus have orf1 genes with <69% pairwise identity.
